Checked taz's latest links. I could get the AMD FX-8120 3.1 GHz 8-core for 177,90€, making it barely 20€ cheaper than the i5. but since the motheboard (Asus P8P67 PRO B3 Intel P67 LGA1155 ATX, 154,90€) that can be used with the Intel chip is about 20€ more expensive than MSI 990XA-GD55 990FX AM3+ ATX (131,90€), I'd still save 40€.
And yeah, I guess the "AK-47" isn't worth the price.

Al, that Asus MB supports two graphics cards if it's not your intention to use a second gpu you could save money there. Check the Asus site for the single card MB. As wobbly said, 600w is ample for a single card system. There are websites that will calculate it for you, just Google it. Spartan showed me one that will even take an overclock into account, but can't remember the site now, . Don't be drawn in by cheap case/PSU deals, it's worth investing in a quality supply. It's been a long time since AMD has dominated the CPU market and although the the AMD 8120 is close to the i5 2500k the intel k series are very over clockable with good cooling. I have the Antec 300, good case for the money. With all fans extracting the front filter does a good job of keeping fluff build up to a minimum. On the down side, the case is a little smaller than most. Some after market coolers are too big to fit and get the side cover back on ! Also it might be a bit tight on size and airflow with two graphics cards. But if your not likely to go down the SLI/Crossfire route then I would recommend it. If your thinking of BF3 then the gtx 560i will play it on high/ultra, the 560 is a bit cheaper but at the end of the day I guess more money buys more fps. The equivalent ATI cards can't handle BF3s MSAA as well as the Nvidia's. Wobbly's i5 2500k/ GTX 560i is a very good 'bang per buck' combination if your budget will stretch.

I've now completed my upgrade: I5 3750k 3.4ghz Asus P8Z77 v lx 8gb Corsair Vengeance ram 1600 MHz Asus GTX 570 ( purchased about 6 months ago but only able to run BF3 on low due to CPU bottleneck ) Arctic i30 cooler With existing : 160gb and 1Tb hard drives Corsair 550w PSU Antec 300 case I intended to fit a Corsair A70 air cooler but couldnt find one available at the time. Unfortunately the Arctic cooler arrived with a couple of fixing screws missing which delayed the build for the best part of a week. The Asus Ai suite software has an auto overclock option which does it all for you. On the fast setting it achieved 4.2ghz , it has an extreme setting but I didn't bother trying it. Infact I've set it back to default now as that is more than enough for BF3. Average core temps idle = 28'c BF3 =58'c BF3@4.2ghz =66'c Tjmax = 105'c These were taken using CoreTemp, the Asus software monitors CPU temp (as opposed to individual cores) and it recorded a max of 41'c overclocked or not ! I'm not to sure if I trust this reading. Oh well, got another 3/4 years to save for the next upgrade Although with prices falling a SSD card could be next. Al, you've gone a bit quiet in this thread...........unlike you !

Nice one BTTF. Sorry I could'nt talk much last night, it is a bugger finding the 'press to talk' flying jets I tried the Asus Ai suite but also found it was not needed to overclock. I used to use both Real Temp and Core Temp to keep an eye on things but found Real Temp easier to read so have kept to that. HWMonitor is pretty good for temps and voltages. SSD is my next step also. My HD is around four years old now and I'm woried about losing the lot Check this out: Lindy USB 3.0 Docking and Clone Station at lindy.co.uk Pop in your new drive alongside the old one (like a toaster) and it copies the lot, including the operating system. Cool ;D

Just be aware you may need low profile ram with some coolers. Spartan are you on commission with AMD ?

Thanks for the help guys. I'll start checking which parts do I really want/need and what would give the best amount of performance with the least amount of money. 1000€ is the maximum that should not be exceeded. And OH, you were talking about the CASE last night. I was puzzled as I thought I was building a computer, not a tower. Do you think this one is good? It's pre-build so at least I couldn't mess it up in the building phase. translate.google.com/translate?sl=fi&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fi&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.databit.fi%2Fdatabit-kanuuna-keskusyksikk%25C3%25B6&act=urlThat's one of the places I might be buying from. I don't know why don't they show their entire catalog on the web page. At least to me it seems a bit better than any previous setup, while still being just under 1000€ AND including a blu-ray drive, a sound card, a case, an integrated network card, it's pre-build so I don't have to worry about the parts fitting and me failing at building, a one year warranty, and a memory card reader. None of those I was looking at previously, when I was just looking for a motherboard, a graphics card, a processor, RAM and other stuff that are included in this set. With an extra 100€ I'd get a Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit, but I guess I could save by buying it separately. It is going a bit over one thousand euros, but with all the stuff the packet is holding, it's not that bad. To me this looks brilliant. What do you think? The last things that might need upgrading are the monitor and the headset. They are both doing fine, but I'm not sure about my monitor's abilities. Its native resolution is 1680x1050. Do I absolutely need a replacement or can I keep it for a while and play with it? I'm short on money so I can't just go and buy everything I see.

Spartan are you on commission with AMD ? No BTTF I am not, I just like their price to power ratio, they beat Intel flat out in that. I have told him that Intel makes faster processors but at MUCH MUCH higher prices. Also AMD's new Zambezi architecture is far superior to that of Intel's current architecture, I am a hardware major in information technology after all Case's/Enclosures are what you put parts into, a built system is a tower, however the slang is that its all the same. I was referring to an enclosure design and that PC you listed will not cut it.

I have just successfully installed my new WD 1TB Caviar Black. Using a 'Lindy dock/clone' station (£40), I placed my old HD in the 'source' and the new WD in the 'target' and pressed 'duplicate' www.amazon.co.uk/Lindy-Docking-Cloning-Station-Drives/dp/B0054NLAX4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1341406375&sr=8-2 Half an hour later I fitted the new drive with the operating system and all data in tact. Saved me weeks of work reinstalling everything ;D I highly recommend this Lindy unit, saves so much work ! The only thing to remember is if you have problems on the old HD it will transfer across to the new one.

I ordered all my parts today. They should arrive within ten days but some were out of stock so I don't know how long will it take. I'll keep you posted.

Six out of the ten components I ordered are ready to be sent. (reserved for order) 3/4 of the out of order items will be resupplied in 3-10 work days (3 work days has passed since I ordered). One item, the G.Skill 16GB Quad Kit Ripjaws, is not only out of order but the resupply date has not been confirmed. The site shows that in their stock in Turku, they have -1 of them. On other similiar items (G.Skill 16GB Quad Kit Ripjaws) the resupply time is 1-4 days or uncomfirmed. They do have the exact same component but with a lower clock speed: the one I ordered runs on 1600 Mhz while the one that is availble is just 1333 Mhz.
The thing is, they are going to send them all at once so the sending cost will stay reasonable, so the package is as fast as the "slowest" item in it. I might call them if nothing has changed by the end of the week. By Friday it would be 6 work days since my order.
I also went to a proper physical store and bought Arma X and Battlefield 3 Limied edition (includes Back to Karkand). Arma X for 45 € and BF3 for 39€. 84€ in total for four games and six expansions, making 8,4€ for one game/expansion. I also got physical maps of the areas in Arma and Arma 2+British+PMC expansion.
