The sun was starting to peek out over the horizon. I glanced over to Smith whom I had gotten to know quite well over the past few weeks. He gave me that sly grin of his that he flashed whenever we started fighting. I chuckled inside as I always did during these times. It was all the laughing I could muster considering the death trap I knew we were moving towards. The Middle Eastern Coalition forces had beat us back 3 times this week already in our attempts to advance on the city of Karkland. We haven't been able to get a foothold in the city yet. Lt. Jackson piped up in my com "Get ready everyone, you know our orders, Lee, you pepper the area with your PKM, Gardner stay back with Lee and provide Sniper support. Smith, Conroy, lead the charge down the side of that fence. We'll try to make our way around to the city square to cut off reinforcements. Squads 3 and 4 will attempt to take the Hotel. Let's move, Go Go Go!"
Smith and I ran down the hill where we were crouching. We could hear gunfire coming from the building to our right, but it seemed no one had taken notice of our run down the hills yet. I spoke too soon as a soldier appeared in the entrance to the doorway. I peppered him with fire from my gun while I could hear Lee's heavy machine gun rip into the entrance.
We quickly ran past the entrance heading for the end of the fence when two more men popped out of the opening at the end of the fence. Smith and I both hit the ground while bullets whizzed by our heads. We opened fire simultanously cutting down the opposing soldiers. I could hear our squadmates chirping on the com, but I ignored them and tried to focus my attention on the area in front of me. To my left on the hills I could see MEC forces battling the men in Squad 1 as they tried to flank through the hills. We were easy targets lying in the field so we got up and made our way towards the entrance. I lead the way towards the opening when I heard Lt. Jackson yell "Look out for claymores!" I stopped a second too slow as the explosion rocked me back and to the ground. Gasping for air I could feel my life sliding from me when I heard the screams of Smith.
"Clear!" The jolt of electricity coursed through my body as I gasped for air.
"Thanks" I whispered into the com. I couldn't believe I had another brush of death like that. I needed to be more careful. Before I had a chance to gather my thoughts, shots rang out behind us. Turning around I saw Lee and Conroy both cut down my 2 MEC soldiers with heavy machine guns from behind. Lt Jackson was running towards us and hadn't seen the men yet, I quickly brought my rifle up, scoped the men, switched to single shot mode and fired off 4 shots in rapid succession taking down one of the men. I could see Smith rushing towards Lee and Gardner to try to revive them. I took aim at the second man when I suddenly felt three bullets hit me in the arm and chest. I crumpled to the ground. I could no longer feel my arms or legs. I knew I was done for this time. I said a silent prayer and waited for the blackness to come.
"Clear!" Another bolt of electricity jolted me from my thoughts. I looked up at Lt. Jacksons face. He had taken my medic equipment and revived me! I picked up his machine gun more determined than ever to be more careful. I smiled inwardly as I saw Lee, Gardner and Smith running back towards us. We all turned from the fence opening and ran down the adjacent alleyway. An MEC sniper looking the wrong way quickly went down in a hail of gunfire from our squad. We slowly approached the corner and looked out on the square. Heavy gunfire could still be heard from the east and west.
We paused to take our breath as a UAV scan was being relayed to us from Lt. Jackson. It looked like the MEC forces were gathered around defending the Hotel. The rest were on the hills behind us, seemingly oblivious to our sneak through the alleyway. I doubted this would last as the men we killed would alert the enemy of our location if their UAV did not.
"Attack here" Lt Jackson pointed out the Square on the map. We ran towards the square when 2 MEC fighters came out of the rubble next to the building in the square. I quickly crouched and brought down one of them but I could not control the kick back from the heavy machine gun I was carrying. I wasn't used to this and could not control the spray well. Thankfully, someone took down the other soldier and we were on the square.
I went prone next to the wall and aimed my weapon towards the west looking out for any soldiers. Huge explosions rocked the square from grenades. I could hear there were soldiers coming to back us up from the com but we had to hold until they could arrive. More grenades rocked the square as I grasped my helmet, hoping that it could protect me from shrapnel. A enemy soldier run into view before me, oblivious to me lying in the shadow of the wall. Too surprised to thing, I simply held down the trigger on my machine gun, plastering him with bullets.
I feeling of relief flooded me as I saw sawud 1 come from across the road.
"Position secured, good job" announced our commander. I got up off the ground but was rocked back against the wall as more grenades exploded in the middle of the road, decimating squad 1. I dove to the ground and quickly scanned the end of the road. Two MEC fighters were jumping and throwing grenades towards us, I could see Lt. Kite run back between 2 buildings to escape, but 4 men were down on the street. The MEC fighters took out their guns and went after Lt. Kite, oblivious to my presence. I quickly fired small bursts into the first man. As he went down I turned to train my weapon on the other as I bullets flew by me and peppered the wall behind me. I could feel bits of brick and plaster hit me on the head, but I unleashed more bursts at the enemy. I heard the distinctive sound of a sniper rifle from behind me and a spray of blood from the enemies head. I turned around to see Lee crouched with his rifle still scanning the area. I got up and surveyed the area. Gardner and Lt. Jackson were both lying motionless on the street. Grenades having taken limbs off of them. I turned to Lee and asked where Smith was. He nodded towards the inside of the wall. I saw him lying there with empty eyes staring ahead with a bullet clean through his head. I tried to summon the anger inside me, but I had seen too much death and destruction already. Lt. Kite came in and commanded Lee and myself to join his decimated squad. He informed us that we had finally taken the Hotel and the Square. Somehow this small victory seemed less with the loss of my squad mates.
"Let's move" Kite said. I jogged off towards another confrontation in the never ending war against the MEC.
(Tales of DeadAim, only some slight exaggerations as the Battlefield 2 game contains no blood. As well, I added names and things like that to make things sounds more realistic)
