First off, run the game in lower resolution, and lower settings. BF2 is a system hog, and what you ran in other games might not run in BF2. Be sure to try the "Reset to Defaults" to see what DICE thinks most computers can handle.
Still lagging?
Go into your audio settings, and disable your EAX. Have audio renderer on software, and put the other thing to low.
Still not fixed?
Here is were things get a little tricky. First off, check your sound card drivers, especially for an Audigy Card. Make sure
ALL of your drivers are the lastest version.
If this doesn't fix it, then you have a hardware problem. Download SiSoftware Sandra Lite.
www.sisoftware.co.uk/?dir=dload&location=sware_dl_3264&langx=en&a=After installing, run the Memory Bandwidth Benchmark, and pick a couple servers that are close to yours. If you do not know what type of memory you have, do the System Scan. It should tell you. If you memory is underperforming (ie over 1000 mb/s less), you most likely have a hardware installation issue.
Restart your computer and press Delete repeatedly to bring up the system bios. In the main screen, you will see your memory, and if it being recognized.
If you have dual channel memory, it should say this. (If it isn't, find your Mobo manual. You may have installed your memory incorrectly). Also, you shouldn't change any of these files, if you are a novice. If it is greyed out and you cannot change anything, do not be alarmed. It is automatic (and most likely) optimal settings. If everything checks out in the bios, then either your memory is faulty, or that's just the way it is. Trying buying better and/or more memory.
Still having issues?
The next potential problem may be your power supply. If you buy a high end card, and have lots of stuff operating in your computer (ie 2 Hard Drives, CD burner, DVD drive), your power supply may be choking itself, and damaging your hardware. Run this Power Supply Calculator to see which PSU your system should be using to power your computer.
www.journeysystems.com/?power_supply_calculatorIf you do not know the type of PSU (400 watts, 600w, or other) you have, you should open up your case. It should say it on the side. If it is lower than what the calculator says (or close, ie +-20 watts), then get a new one.
This should cover every conceivable problem that you could have. It most likely is the sound card, and un-updated drivers.
However, here are some small tweaks that may help your computer's performance.
In "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\Settings", find your videodefault.con file. Open it with notepad, and change the last number from 0 tp 240. This helps the refresh rates.
Try disabling your AV software, especially if you are running Norton. It eats up your memory, and could be affecting gameplay.
FEW!! Hope any of this helps
