One of the nice things about BF2 is the frequent first times accomplishments that occur throughout a long-term playing experience. I was playing in the position of U.S. commander when I saw an enemy boat coming from the Northwest a little over half way across the map heading for the U.S. Main Base on the Highway Tampa map. I “spotted” the vessel to alert our team of the inbound threat.
On a whim, I tried what I thought would likely be an unsuccessful attempt to kill the intruder. I put the Artillery cross-hairs on the map with a good lead for the built-in delay for the rounds to impact the ground and clicked the button to initiate the delivery of fire. When I revisited the target area and zoomed in on the point of impact, I pleasantly surprise to witness one of the first rounds make a direct hit on the boat.
Alright!! Steel on target, Intruder destroyed. Now, back to work.

Arty kills are some of the greatest immediate-feedback devices for commanders in BF2. I had a fairly interesting game as the US Commander a while ago on 64 Dam.
I had just joined the game and noticed that my team was getting destroyed by the MEC's superior pilots, despite our uncappable airbase. I realized immediately what my strategy would be as comm, and I immediately acted upon it once having been elected. I directed my squad leaders (there were only two with few members in their squads) to invite all the players who currently had no squads. I requested that all lone-wolfs either join or create squads (of course this only had limited effect, though I did manage two almost-full squads which followed my orders fairly well).
My strategy was simply to keep order in my squads as well as to take and keep the cappable MEC airbase as well as enough flags to get back our ticket-deficit, with the help of our air supremacy. This strategy worked wonders, but we were gravely behind in tickets and I couldn't afford to lose many troops. I instructed them to take pot-shots and not push the final enemy position if they would sustain heavy losses.
At one point, Alpha squad (my most loyal squad) was trapped in a small building receiving incoming tank and mounted MG fire from a jeep. They were sustaining manageable losses, with their SL acting as a mobile spawning point to keep them in position and a medic keeping most of the damage at a minimum. I hadn't heard a thing from the SL about his situation, but having noticed their circumstance I dropped an artillery marker and ordered them to stay under cover. I had gone to spot for Bravo when Alpha's SL radioed in to say "Nice Shot, four kills, comm." I panned back to Alpha and noticed the wrecks of two jeeps and a tank, with Alpha making their way to help Bravo.
(Sadly we lost that round by a couple tickets, but with the huge deficit coming in, none of us felt like we had played poorly.)
Cheers, Milk
