Bugbear is the Finnish game company that is known for the Flatout games (the awful Flatout 3 was not developed by them), as well as Rally Trophy and Ridge Racer Unbounded. Surprise surprise, they are developing yet another driving game - but this time it's not a Flatout title. At the moment it doesn't even have a title, but they are kickstarting it anyway.
But there's another reason altogether that got me excited. They released a decade-old prototype for Flatout for free. It has never been shown publicly.

Oh man, what a prototype. It may only have four cars (three American muscle cars and a VW Beetle) and four tracks (actually two and reversed versions), but it's a lot of fun. It definitealy feels like the first Flatout. There are no lap times, race positions shown, no way to win or lose. (as far as I know) Interestingly, they had some stuff in the prototype that didn't make it into the final version of the game, like cockpit view and getting out of the car. The driver never flies through the windshield, though. On my Windows 8 laptop, I didn't have any sound.
Now, do you want to make it even more fun? Go to the DATA folder, in which you'll find a CARS folder, and inside that are four folders, one for each car. There are a few .ini files that anyone can edit easily with notepad. Edit the CAR.ini and the engine.ini files and experiment with incredible amounts of torque, tiny amounts of mass, bouncy suspension, super-powerful brakes and anything you like! (hint: change the "Fictitious acceleration force" to something like 30, meaning 30G (fighter jet pilots experience about 7G, I think)), and watch as the car flies past the opponents in a spectacular wheelie.
I think it's also possible to add more gears, turn RWD cars into AWD's, have perfect grip on any surface, make the car parts fly away from the smallest touch and probably much more.
