You might remember a slightly old game that went by the name "Battlefield: Bad Company 2". Originally released in 2010, Bad Company 2 was the sequel to DICE's spin off game "Battlefield: Bad Company" and featured large maps with destructible environments, the game was replaced in 2011 as the lead title of the franchise by Battlefield 3.
Fast forward to today, and part of the community hasn't forgotten about Bad Company 2's existence in a sea of first-person shooters. For two years, NoFaTe and the community at Emulator Nexus have been working on reverse engineering the game and discovered not only that the maps can be modified with some effort, but that alongside the leaked server files, map layouts, vehicle handling and weapon multipliers could be altered to change the way the game plays out.
For the sake of simplicity, all it takes on the player side to be able to access a modified server (which can be setup by anyone, and many are currently up and running) is the download of a simple .dll file.
On the server side however, things are a bit more complicated. The software technically isn't a direct modification of the game files, but more a simulation which is run on both Windows or Linux-based servers.
The mod tools are still in late beta stages and is still not complete, but the potential is certainly there.
There is a video of changed map layout, modified attack rockets physics and improved chopper handling.

Altitude ceiling removed:
* Collision detection
Many buildings outside of the playable area have no collision detection enabled.
Can this be changed ? Yes.
* Change mode of maps
Can we turn Rush maps into CQ maps ? No, but all maps are full size so you can just change the boundaries.
* Adding Maps
Would we be able to create SQDM Arica Harbor 2 at the dock area as additional map ? No. But you can just move the SQDM points to the dock area.
(Or any other - this just entered my mind being a well playable part of the map)
* Duplication of entities
Once the map editor has grown up, will we be able to duplicate buildings ? Not yet (only in SP). I'm fairly sure the servers have hash checks so you can't add stuff, but those will be broken (maybe).
Same for trees and bushes
* Daytime
Ignoring the scope bug, would we be able to change Daytime/Nighttime for maps ? Yes. Probably.
Introducing new game mode "Behind Enemy Lines":
During the Cold War, an US operative is trapped deep behind enemy lines, hunted by 4 elite Russian Spetznaz units. To complete his mission, he must get to two successive radio stations and upload plans for the secret Russian superweapon. The Russians must make sure that never happens.
Issued Equipment:
US: Your choice of weaponry, go stealth or take them head on, the choice is yours. Also, 2x the body armor for Russians.
RU: Thompson submachine gun and explosives for taking out cover (not very good vs. infantry)
Feel free to suggest improvements. Keep in mind that many features are still impossible to implement.
I will open this up to be tested tomorrow or the day after that. Sign up if you want to volunteer. You'll need to download a 1mb DLL file and place it in your BC2 folder. That is all.
