The Point/Award/Rank System in Bad Company 2 (BFBC2) is in need of attention.
I will seek to offer up an explanation and provide a series of recommendations. I believe the BFBC2 Point/Award/Rank System has an exaggerated point scheme. There are so many points handed out for so many different acts that it damn near impossible to keep track of what is going on. 100; 1,000; and 10,000 points all handed out in clumps in one gaming match. Here is an example of a screen capture taken at the end of a BFBC2 gaming match:
14,390 points in a single match. Are you kidding me?
Progression through the ranks and issuing of awards is conducted at lightning speed to the point where it just doesn’t matter. A player is at the highest rank in a couple months instead of a year or two with the Battlefield 2 (BF2) predecessor. Here is the rank structure with the affiliated points for BFBC2:
BFBC2 rank structure positive features:
- The number of ranks went from 21 in BF2 to 50 in BC2
- Bronze, silver, gold ranks are present
- Warrant officer rank has been added
- Long waits between ranks reduced
BFBC2 rank structure negative features:
- Progression too fast
- First Sergeant and Sergeant Major ranks removed
- Top ranked player for the week removed for Sergeant Major and 4-star general
- Points given for awards received
- Mis-labeling of ranks, if compared with U.S. ranks. (This is potentially point of huge discussion. Should the rank structure be based on any real country? This recommendation is based somewhat on the U.S. rank structure. I understand this is a game and the rank structure could be based on a different country or on a completely fictional system. The BF2 rank structure was somewhat based on the U.S. military with a mix of U.S. Army and U.S. Marine corps ranks/labeling.)
BF2 was by no means perfect, but provided a more easily understood system with a long duration of online multiplayer gaming in mind. Let’s get back to a less complex manageable structure of progression. Here is the point system from BF2:
Points … Action
+2 ….... Kill
+1 …….. Kill Assist
+1 …….. Driver Kill Assist
+1 …….. Heal
+1 ….... Revive
+1 ….... Resupply ammo
+1 ….... Repair
+2 …….. Change flag to neutral
+2 …..… Change flag to friendly
+1 ….…. Assist in flag change
+1 …….. Flag defend
-4 ……... Team Kill
-2 …..... Team damage
-2 …..... Team Vehicle Damage
From folks who have played 2142 extensively, they say the point system is improved.
And, here is the rank structure from BF2:
I believe the BF2 point rank system IS the template that should be used for Battlefield 3 with the understanding that the point system also influences in-game behavior. Killing enemy forces, reviving friendly forces, encouraging teamwork, and discouraging team damage/kills are some of many important variables in the point scheme. I am told, one of the very nice features in BF2142 are the points awarded for following orders.
BF2 rank structure positive features:
- The player earned the rank
- A player could more easily understand the point scheme
- Players had to play much longer than BFBC2 to attain the higher ranks
BF2 rank structure negative features:
- Too few ranks
- Big point gaps between some ranks
- Unclear requirements for some ranks
At this time, I would like to present the recommended rank structure for BF3:
Let’s dig into this recommended Battlefield 3 Rank Structure. This laydown provides a more evenly distributed incremental rank progression as compared to the BF2 Rank Structure.
From ranks 1 to 4 in BF2, the points needed went like this 150, 500, 800, 2,500 points with the gaps between the same ranks 1 to 2 being 350, 2 to 3 is 300, and to 4 is 1,700 points. That’s 350, 300, 1,700 spreads.
For the same ranks in this BF3 structure, the points go from 150, 300, 500, 800 with the gaps being 150, 200, 300.
In BF2, from rank 6 to 7 is 12,000 points to progress to the next rank, from 8 to 9 is 30,000, and to the first officer rank is Second Lieutenant (rank 12) at 60,000 points.
For BF3, from rank 6 to 7 is 1,000 points, from 8 to 9 is 1,000, and the first officer rank is Warrant Officer Bronze (rank 25) at 100,000 points.
This BF3 structure has 24 enlisted ranks as compared with 11 enlisted ranks in BF2. That is more than twice as many enlisted ranks. Each rank has three levels which are bronze, silver, and gold. The progression within a rank cluster bronze, silver, gold has a very similar point spread between the three ranks and going to the next rank will require a greater number of points to advance. The exceptions where there is only one of each rank in the enlisted ranks are Recruit, First Sergeant, Sergeant Major, and Sergeant Major of the Army. The recruit is brand new to Battlefield service and quickly progresses to have rank insignia on his sleeve or collar. The Master Sergeant rank progress is at 5,000 point increments from bronze to silver and then again to gold. Then there is a big 20,000 point jump to the solo rank of First Sergeant and another 20,000 point jump to Sergeant Major. These are the senior enlisted members of the Noncommissioned Officer Corps. It is a status of great importance with the First Sergeant being the senior enlisted in a Company supporting a Company Commander, a Captain, and the Sergeant Major being the senior enlisted in a Battalion supporting a Lieutenant Colonel in the real-world.
As a player progresses from enlisted to warrant officer, the points drop back down to 10,000 for each promotion and jumps to 20,000 again to gain Lieutenant rank. Promotion requirements increase it 15,000 point increments with 20,000 points to move the next offer rank cluster for Lieutenant and Captain. For Major, the requirement in the cluster is 20,000 with a promotion to Colonel taking 30,000 points.
Achieving the rank of General is a huge accomplishment with a 50,000 point requirement. Rank progression slow downs as the obligation to accumulate points elevates to 20,000 within the cluster and 30,000 moving to the next cluster until the promotion to Lieutenant General with 40,000 points being necessary. 30,000 within the rank cluster with a 40,000 point bridge to move up. Four-star general mandates 35,000 points to move from bronze to silver and another 35,000 to make gold. There is only one General of the Army rank (rank 56) to be shared by all those who reached the highest standard rank in Battlefield 3.
Green Tabs are an extra distinguishing marker of meeting developmental criteria. In the real-world military leaders in key leadership positions wear green felt under their rank to signify the are in-charge of soldiers. Squad Leaders, Platoon Sergeants, Company First Sergeants, Battalion Sergeant Majors, Platoon Leaders, Company Commanders, Battalion Commanders, Brigade Commanders, etc all wear the green fabric under their rank to display their importance and position of responsibility.
Much like the requirements of pins, ribbons, badges, and medals; the green tabs could be brandished, if earned. If the BF player does not meet the requirements, then the rank goes without the green background. Here are the thoughts for each rank cluster with a Green Tab as an option:
- Staff Sergeant: Infantry fighting skills and time as a squad leader
- Sergeant First Class: Armor fighting skills and time as a squad leader
- First Sergeant: Certain level of success as a squad leader
- Sergeant Major: Greater level of success as a squad leader
- Lieutenant as real-world platoon leader and Major (Lieutenant Colonel) as real-world battalion commander are skipped in order not to flood the officer ranks with green tabs
- Captain: Commander position time
- Colonel: Commander position success
The positions of Sergeant Major of the Army (rank 24) and Supreme Commander (rank 57) will change every week depending on the leaderboard accomplishments. There would only be one person in each position for one week much like the Sergeant Major of the Force and the 4-star General in Battlefield 2. (It is not clear to this author whether or not this portion the BF2 system functioned well.) On a similar note, the Chief Warrant Officer of the Army (rank 31) would be one player for one week based on Aviation accomplishments within the Chief Warrant Officer Gold rank (rank 30). Achieving rank 44, Brigadier General Bronze, will trigger two forms of recognition for the “Newest General.” EA/DICE will send an automated email to the registered account holder’s email address with a certificate of accomplishment and a “thank you.” The players screen name will be recorded on a special web page listing all of the personnel who attained the rank of general in Battlefield 3. Reaching rank 44 with 450,000 is a big deal as it is over twice the amount of points that were need to achieve the highest rank in BF2 with 200,000 points.
Recommended BF3 rank structure positive features:
- Players will earn the rank
- Players should be able to easily understand the point scheme
- Players will be gaming for a long duration to attain the higher ranks
- Being an officer will mean something and being a general will really mean something
- More ranks than any previous Battlefield game
- More manageable and progressively more difficult point gaps between ranks
- Upon promotion to a new rank, requirements for the next rank will be provided to gamers
- First Sergeant and Sergeant Major ranks return
- Top ranked player for the week returned for Sergeant Major and General of the Army
- Leadership “Green Tabs” added
- Chief Warrant Officer of the Army added
- Promotion to Brigadier General recognized
- Points NOT given for awards received
- Labeling of ranks more closely aligned with U.S. ranks.
Recommended BF3 rank structure negative features:
- It will take much longer to attain the highest ranks when compared to BFBC2 and BF2
- Rank structure aligned with the U.S. military system
* My BF2142 experience is limited and due to that lack of understanding is not used in this presentation. There may or may not be a more refined points scheme enacted in BF2142.
Thank you for taking the time to examine this recommendation.
