This may or may not be in my top 10 or top 20 list, but I'll write a short review anyway.
Saint's Row: The Third
In short, it's like a poor man's GTA with cool ideas but often bad execution. You are the leader of a crime organisation, the Saints. Your gang is kicked out from the throne and is no longer the biggest one in the city. During the story you basically just show the other gang's who's the boss. The gangs are color coded, so it's easy to recognise who's on who's side. There is also law enforcement making your life more difficult if you commit serious crimes.
You can change your character's appearance and even gender for a small fee (in-game money). You can be very precise with the facial structure, and some have recreated some celebrities with it. At the moment I'm playing as a Jason Statham look-alike, but while it doesn't look exactly like the man, the voice I chose fits him like a glove. And so do the black suit and the fast cars I own.
It took me 30 hours to finish the game, but I did do a lot of the extra stuff and just free roam. I also left the game running a few times while I was away from the computer. A more realistic time for playing through the campaign is probably at most half of that.
The Good
- The gameplay is usually pretty fluid.
- It got me addicted, which is a sign of a good game.
- Let's just say it's impossible to guess what some of the levels contain. Mostly positive surprises.
- A free open world to mess around in. There are some side missions to play, and they are decent fun.
- You can play the campaign in co-op. Double the fun!
- You can shoot out tires to make your chasers lose you.
- You can call in reinforcements, a gang member who will bring any of your cars in mere seconds, a notoriety reset etc.
- Customizable vehicles and upgradeable weapons.
The bad
- Tank controls on keyboard are utterly awful. If you press W, it usually goes forward. But if you look around/aim the turret, the tank will rotate and start moving in the direction you're aiming at. If you look back and press W, it will start moving backwards. In every other game I've played (that include tanks, of course) the vehicle will move forwards regardless of where you're aiming. This makes driving tanks a horrible experience.
- Some missions are really dull or frustrating.
- One of those is the first mission. Shoot everyone. Do it again. Before you are allowed to roam the world freely, there's about 30 minutes (or more) of storyline missions. While they are pretty interesting as concepts, it wasn't so fun to play through them.
- A few times the missions end abruptly. Just when you thought you're going to fight through half an enemy gang, the mission just ends.
- The AI drivers are behaving weirdly. Sudden u-turns are common. If you shoot at them, they will put the pedal to the metal, though.
My rating: **** (four stars)
I got it for a fiver on a sale, so it was definitely worth the price. Saint's Row: The Third is a fun game, but far fom perfect. It's not that bad either.
