Supreme Commander is a Real-Time Strategy (RTS) computer game released in February 2007, designed by Chris Taylor, and developed by the Gas Powered Games company. It is the successor to Total Annihilation released in 1997. It is both a single player and multi-player video game.
A war has be raging for a 1,000 years called the "Infinite War." There are three factions: United Earth Federation, Cybran Nation, and Aeon Illuminate. Each seeks control of the galaxy.
- The United Earth Federation (or UEF) is the faction representing the interests of a united, Earth-based government.
- The Cybran Nation is composed of Symbionts, humans with brains that have been enhanced with computer implants.
- The Aeon Illuminate are descendants of the first humans to encounter intelligent alien life. The aliens had a highly advanced society and were destroyed by a group of human extremists. The surviving colonists of the alien planet embraced the alien philosophy, known as "The Way," and have been conducting assaults trying to "purge" all those who do not share in their beliefs.
The game begins with players choosing a faction to fight for. The player then commands a sole "Armored Command Unit" (ACU). The ACU constructs infrastructure to build an army and accumulates "Mass," building material, and energy to support his effort. Each faction has Land, Air, and Naval forces.
The game uses a "strategic zoom" system that allows a player to zoom-out far enough to view the entire map on the screen with individual units represented by icons or zoom-in close enough to see the details of individual units and vegetation. A player can field thousand units on a vast battlefield in a wide range of environments from desert to arctic.
A lot of preparations (commands to units) can be accomplished while the game is paused. The game makes use of multi-core processing and multiple monitors. As a whole, the units controls are excellent and graphics are amazing. Just wait until you crush one of your enemies. Wow! What a finally.
The single player campaign consists of eighteen missions, six for each faction. A player begins as an inexperienced commander who plays a key role in his faction's combat campaign to bring the 'Infinite War' to an end. When a player accomplishes his objective, the map is expanded, sometimes tripling in size, and new challenges are revealed.
