Some tips for a newcomer:
- Friendly fire is on on most servers.
- Because of this, look at the uniforms carefully. The name tags pop up so slowly that it is much more reliable to just look at the uniform to judge whether it's an enemy or not. You could also look at the weapon they are carrying, because unlike in BF3, you can only spawn with weapons from your faction. Of course an enemy or a friendly might pick up an enemy's kit, but that won't change the uniform.
- If you don't know what different pieces of equipment do, experiment in single player (conquest against bots). Just so it won't happen once again, the box some engineer kits on some factions carry is a satchel charge, a timed explosive. In German it's "3kg Geballter Ladung" and in English "Satchel Charge" or "Composition B". There could be more names for it I forgot to mention. It's an extremely powerful explosive desgined for destroygn tanks. Run behind the tank without getting seen by the tank driver, set the charge (takes about 4 seconds, start while running if you think you can make it) and run away behind cover.
- If you don't know much about WWII tanks and other vehicles, I suggest you to look at this page forgottenhope.warumdarum.de/fh2_vehicles.php? to see the main differences. Since Germany is always on one side, all you have to do is learn what all the German vehicles look like. (Un)fortunately there are dozens of them. Don't pick the AT kit in multiplayer before you can identify a tank's IFF (identification friend or foe) status. Just play as infantry, look at the tanks you have in the main bases and what tanks your team mates are attacking. Also take a look at the (mini)map. A blue or green vehicle is friendly, and most of the time enemy vehicles don't show up on maps.
- If you accidentially team kill, type in the team chat "sorry". If you have time to type, you could also say you are new to the game.
- Spotting is toned down to almost absolute minimum. No 3d spotting of course, and even 2d spotting has been toned down. You have to have binoculars equipped to be able to spot enemies on the map.
- There is no random deviation. But there is a lot of recoil. The guns will always hit where the barrel is pointed, unlike in vanilla BF2 and Project Reality.
- You can't spawn with a scoped rifle or an ammo-giving kit. You have to find those rare kits lying around in some places on the maps. On some maps they simply don't exist at all.
- There are no BF2-style medics in the game. No reviving in this mod. If you got shot in WWII, you're either dead, wounded (cured by standing on top of a badage for a second) or incapitated (practically dead). There is however a pick-up kit which gives you a pistol and a lot of bandages.
- No pistols were issued for the regular troops in WWII, so only the officer kit (only available if you are a fireteam leader), the machine gunner kit, the medic kit, the AT rifle kit and some other kits have access to a pistol.
- There is artillery which can be called with binoculars. Just left click while holding the binoculars, whether you are looking through them or not. But there's a catch: someone has to man the mortar, aim (align the numbers to zero) and fire. This might take a few seconds, the mortar might have other targets or maybe there just is no one in the mortar. Right click on the mortar to see where you are aiming at, hold q for the commo rose and select previous or next target if they are available. On the right side of the scope you can see how many targtes you have. There is a unique commo rose command for mortar users: "Need more targets". Use this if you don't have targets. But don't spam it.
- The commo rose has a lot of new commands. The basics are there, except sorry and thanks. (you'll have to type it on the chat or say it in the VoIP) A good one is "Incoming!" (the character also sometimes says "Take cover"/In Dekung gehen!") which is useful to warn others about an incoming bombing run or grenade. Another one I've used many times is "Hold your fire" or "Feuer einstellen!" if you are on the German side. This is good if you suspect that a friendly might open fire if you suddenly pop out from somewhere or if a frienfly is shooting at you and doesn't stop. A good thing about FH is that you'll learn some German while playing!
- If you have a mine kit, remember to warn others about the mines. That's what the mine markers (the little flags) are for. Unfortunately and fortunately the enemy can also see them. You could try to hide them so that the friendlies advancing from one direction will see the markers but the enemy coming from the other direction wont'. You could also use them to deceive the enemy into thinking a road is mined so they will go around it, maybe into an ambush or into a place that's really mined.
- If you are looking for teamwork, there is usually a fireteam (squads in BF2) named "teamwork". They are usually pretty good. If you are experienced, you might want to make one yourself. Don't forget to advertise it on the tema channel.
- A microphone is extremely useful, even if you are the only in the fireteam having one. Just don't insult people, play music or anything like that.
