TIPS & TRICKS FOR ATTACK HELI'S
A lot of the following, should be known by alot of you, but there are few tricks that i'm sure some of you won't know, and hopefully some of you will become better in the attack helis for it.
I spend alot of my time in helis, piloting, in clan matches i'm always flying, and if i'm lucky on public server's i'll often be flying one. I do gun, which im quite good at, but it isnt my main thing, although i will go over a few little tricks with TV's.
The following will be spilt into 3 sections:
A) General Stuff related to Heli's
B) Piloting Choppers
C) Gunning
General Stuff
A-1 Know Your Map
This really doesn't just apply to being in Heli, you use it everytime you play the game. But knowing the map well, is a huge help when your in the heli, wether it be dropping behind a building to avoid AA, or knowing the cap radius of a flag, so you know where guys may be hiding.
A-2 Control Setup
I use default controls for the most part, i use mouse and keyborad, just my flares are on Mouse Button 3. Also the Picth and Yaw factor are set to 4 in the opitions, which allows for slightly tigther turning.
A-3 Teamwork & Communication
Your part of a team when all is said and done, and you should always be using that to your advantage, help your team whenever possible, cover them capping a flag, or fly to another flag to stop it from being capped. If you help them, they are more likely to return the favour if/when you need it. You should always be in a squad with the person in the Heli aswell, and if possible the people in the jets too (not always possible but try). Useful for at least one of you to have a working mic too, VOIP is a big plus when flying or gunning.
A-4 Types/Grades Of Pilots
In my eyes there are 4 types of Heli pilots, the Bad/Noob, the average , the good and the great. The Bad ones, will rarely give gunners a decent shot, never spot anything and tend to hover and move slowly. And tend to crash, when they panic. My advice NEVER get in with em.
Average pilots, will spot a few things, give the gunners a few good shots, and will generally not crash too often. They are alright if your good with TV missles.
Good ones, you wont find many great ones, so get in with the good ones if you can. They'll nearly always be giving the gunner lined-up shots, will be average with the Hydra missles, will spot alot of targets, and be able to avoid alot of fire, without much risk of crashing.
Great pilots, you wont find many, but if your lucky enough to get in with one, providing your a half decent gunner, you really can turn a match right round, and you'll get alot of points, along with a decent K:D Ratio. They'll be spotting more targets than you can shoot at, lining you up everytime your ready for a shot, decent with Hydra missles, and will know exactly when to pull out for repairs, but as i said you wont find many!
Piloting
B-1 Don't be a RAMBO
Chances are you'll die very quickly, don't show-off either, doesnt matter if you can roll a heli, or back-flip it, and then when it really matters, you cant dodge a missle for hell. And your not gonna impress anyone, it's an online game, people really don't care, aslong as they are getting their points or having a laugh.
B-2 Evading Anti-Air Missles
Air-to-Air missles alot of the time will just miss, they will hit now and again, but only noob pilots will use them, the good jet pilots wont need them. Surface-to-Air Missles are the bugger, all but impossible to dodge, you'll get lucky every now and again, but there no set thing that will work everytime. As soon as the enemy gets a lock-on you, DON'T PANIC (which is what alot of pilots do), DONT start randomly flipping the heli, give your gunner a clear shot, and hopefully he'll take it, and chances are you'll come out alive. The best thing is using the landscape, trees will help break the lock for a brief moment, aswell as other objects. Knowing when to flare is also a winner, i usually do it about on the solid lock tone, however i may use them to break them even getting a lock providing i can get behind some cover, or out of its range, before they'll get a lock again.
B-3 Your Missles (Hydra missles)
Atfer your gunner these are your best friend while flying. It'll take a while to get used to them as they go quite slow (compared to other missles), and you cant steer them, and they don't lock on to anything. However Hydra misslies are a great help in certain situtions. 4/5 will take out a APC 6/7 for a TANK, and 5-6 for Attack Heli. You have 40 of these missles in pod's of 8 so don't worry about wasting them, i always fire off my last few if theres only 2/3 left in the pod, so im full loaded for a tank/apc. There are one thing you have to just get used to, you just have to thing about leading your target so when your missles reach him, he'll be there.
B-4 Evading TV Missles
Alot of people will say barrell roll the heli, when you see missle in-bound. If you do this over a small height only losing 20-40 feet, the heli's hitboxes will actually sit inside the circle, so your actually abit easy to hit, if a gunner knows this it's good night. So if you roll in a big enough circle to avoid the hitbox glitch, your losing quite abit of height, and then the enemy gunner will just open up the cannons on you. A sharp banking to the side is the most effective way, doing it at the last possible moment aswell, so gunner has less chance.
B-5 Keeping Your Gunner On Target
Below is an image of the center of where the TV missle is before it's fired so you can keep your gunner lined-up as best you can.
The black dot is the center of TV missle view.
Always line up targets cas close to that as possible, sometimes if your chasing a transport heli it can be useful to "lead" the target slightly, not much though. Range of TV is 400m, MEC Chopper TV is 420m as is travels slightly faster, use flags as a rough guide to distance.
B-6 Looking Around & Spotting
Spotting jets is very useful, even if yourself or the gunner doesnt have a shot. You can watch them on your mini-map then and see when they are coming round for a pass. If your other jets are nearby try to get them to see it, chances are they'll chase the enemy jet, even if they cant kill it, it at least gets him off you back for a while. Always turn your c**kpit off just press C once, and it'll be off. And when your flying if you hold down Ctrl you can look around (not behind) without changing the direction your flying.
B-7 Beware your Height & Keep Moving
It changes map to map, and different situtions require different heights so theres no real rule about it. But your no good to yourself or your gunner, flying at 10 feet off the deck. Also you dont wanna be flying super high, so ground targets are harder to spot and have to be that much closer. If you pounding the last flag or something keep moving, dont hover otherwise SRAW's will have your name on it. If you can circle around the flag to aoivd any ground fire, then it's about the best thing you can do.
Keep travelling fast when your not pounding a flag, so any jets that may spot you are gonna have a harder time finding you by time thay have banked around. Also NEVER EVER capture a flag in a Attack Heli it's a total watse, and chances are you'll die very quickly. You worry about armour and heli's, let the troops worry about the flags!
B- 8 Id'ing Ground Threats
Always handy to know whats shooting at you.
Jeep's will tear you apart very quickly from full health about 4-5 seconds you'll be dead, aslong as they are a good shot. HUMVEE's (+ MEC and Chinese type) are the worst as cannons have 360 view and have a decent up/down pitch. FAV's next, only the rear one to worry about, front one does little-to no damage. DPV's only have limited view on the guns, so stay behind when possible, as with FAV only rear one to worry about.
Tanks, MG's do little damage, but if they get a tank shell on you, then it's good night, even from full health they only need a few MG rounds, and you'll be on fire. The MG's on top of tanks are slightly more powerful, but dont have a decent up/down pitch.
APC's, they'll knock down a bar of health with ecah APC round, the rockets they fire do about 50% damage, but APC, has poor up/down pitch so they pose little threat unless your on the alarm.
SRAW's And Eryx's, keep moving and these shouldn't be much of a problem, will take 50% health off, and beware when moving slowly. Sharqi worst map for them.
M95's will take about a bar off with each hit, not a problem at all really, just annoying.
Anti-Air Veh's, the only good thing about them is you get a warning, they'll tear you apart quickly with the cannon, and only take 3 missles and your down. 2 and your on the RED, so always try to ctach them off guard, you have about a 100m+ range then them, so use that to your advantage aswell.
Gunning
Everyone thinks the hitboxes are on your targets as to why TV missles goes thru alot of targets, wrong it's on the missle, but a missle travelling at 100m/sec would be quite tricky. Ground targets nearly always die, because splash damage will kill em if missle doesnt. Remeber your range is about 400m for TV missles, so dont watse them if your target is certainly out of range, you only have 8 missles.
C-1 Taking Down Helis
As i said in the piloting section, hitting a rolling heli isnt that hard, not really easy by any means, just remember the hitboxes do screw up abit, so use it to your advantage. When possible always aim for the tail that hitbox seems to be the only one that will always kill, although it's harder to hit.
C-2 Taking Down Jets
Hard, but pisses pilots off no end, you need a good pilot to make sure you have that shot when its needed but if you can do it. Jets will often slow down to try and cannon you down, so your TV missle will catch them up fast if they dont get you.
C-3 Ground Targets
Missles for APC/Tanks/Linebackers, and slow moving jeeps, Cannons for FAV's/DPV's. You can hit DPV's and FAV's with TV missles but they move fast enough to make it tricky. Cannons do damage to APC/Tanks but not nearly enough.
C-4 Taking out Infantry
With the expection of the MEC cannon, as its a beast. You should always fire cannon is small brusts, to take out infantry, when cannon overheats it takes longer to cool down, if you fire short brusts, it'll cool down quicker, and therefore you can keep gunning infantry down really quickly.
C-4 General Gunning Stuff
Always try to lead you target by abit, it allows hitboxes to become back on track with missle if they are going straighter, and therefore higher chance of getting a kill. Reload time for TV missle is 6 seconds, so count that roughly so your not switching to it too early all the time. Don't watse your missles you only have 8, before your pilot has to re-arm.
Targets in order of importance
Enemy Attack Heli/Enemy Jets/Mobile AA (Linebackers)/Fixed SAM sites.
Thats all i can think of right now, I'll add more as and when i remember it. and if anyone wants anything added or something answered (and yes related to flying helis in bf2:P). And i'll do my best to help you out. Sorry for any spelling mistakes my spelling is BAD even at the best of times, and my typing aint much beter.
I hope some of you find at least some of it useful.
