I find hand grenades are more of a secondary weapon to your assault rifle. The grenade has a rather long delay time until you can switch to it and actually throw it (roughly 3 seconds) so it is useless in close quarters combat unless your opponent is waiting to ambush.
As you know, you only have 4 grenades to work with, so you don't get a lot of grenade use (unless, you are Support and can resupply yourself with more ammo) The Situations where I use a grenade are:
- When taking over a specific point that I KNOW (as if their on the radar) has enemys. I use the radar to get my direction right then find the height so that it will land on them. But, make sure that it is in the direction they would logically run to since there is a delay for the explosion.
- Meat grinders. This one seems obvious, but a lot of times people forget about their grenades when they encounter swarms on the Jalalabad/Karkand/ and other popular Infantry Only (IO) maps. In these situations, it is really smart to grab a Support kit, then plant some ammo around your position and then lob grenades all over the place. Resupply and continue. Even if you don't get kills, the intimidation factor does miracles for breaking the enemy's lines and providing your teammates the delay/disruption they need to win the fight for the flag.
- Defending friendly troops from mass attacks by enemy troops. This is again another situation to use intimidation more than to actually take them out. If you see a lot of enemy troops coming, it would be to easy for them to take you out while you try to shoot one of them. Instead, go prone or crouch and lob grenades IN FRONT of them. You will likely do some damage making requiring less hits to put them out of action. Also, they will spread out looking for cover giving you a chance to snipe them one at a time.
- Fire Fights, where the enemy has good cover. Ironically, the best cover for gun to gun, can get you killed if your facing a skilled grenade (Nade) lobber. Be sure to throw it on the side your enemy he will run toward to avoid the explosion then switch to your rifle and take him down as he looks for cover.
- This technique is one of my favorites although rather rare. In a meatgrinder, when you see a dead body close to a bunch of his enemy comrads you can throw nade onto his body, since there is a high likelihood that a medic will look to resuscitate him. I have on many occasions got double/Triple kills from a chance throw onto a well placed dead body.
These are many ways to be EFFECTIVE with the grenade. Practice and try different techniques. Deciding under which circumstances and remembering is the hardest part.
To get kills out of your grenades you must learn from experience since it is more about perceiving what your enemy will do and placing grenades so that he runs into them as he moves around about his business.
Again, always throw grenades to one side of your enemy you think he will go to, since if you throw directly on him he can move anywhere and be safe.

Sometimes I can be deadly with grenades and other times im rubbish! As with robnob, I suppose it is all a matter of PRACTICE.

The main thing about using them is learning where to place them on different parts of a map so that you expect your enemy to walk into them.
One technique is to throw 'em and pressure your adversary to move one way then lob another in the area of the other direction of movement. Then he will run into your second grenade.

Knowing where players go prone to capture flags can be a good location to place a grenade.

I know I am repeating some thing that have already been said, but this is what I do with grenades
1. Attacking an area that I know some one is "dug in" Toss a grenade into the area then switch to gun and charge in. Some times it will force them out of cover other times I get a kill with it and at worst it will distract them enough to give me a better chance of shooting them. 2. If I see a group or squad of player close together it is always worth tossing one, because there is a good chance you'll get at least one kill. I've gotten 3 or 4 kills with one grenade more than once. 3. When I get pinned down behind cover, I'll lob grenades in the general direction of the attackers. More often than not I'll get a kill before they can get me.
