The physicists at Cern are about 99.9 percent sure that what they have found today indeed is the Higgs boson which scientists have been looking for since 1970 when Peter Higgs created the theory that such a boson would exist. The man himself never thought it would be found during his lifetime.
The Higgs boson gives elementary particles mass.
This is a very big discovery. It will revolutionize particle physics. This is the first step in understanding how the universe was born.
At this point I don't know how will it affect things. I can only assume that a lot of formulas have to be rewritten in the field of nuclear physics.

Yes, but will this lead to faster and cheaper computers? That's what I'm interested in.

Just read about this through my Yahoo Mail, way to go CERN, Stephen Hawking right now must be exceptionally proud and working on new theoretical physics formulas due to this revolutionary discovery. To put this in layman's terms, for the physics community this is as revolutionary as Isaac Newton proving the law of gravity.

Stephen Hawking lost a bet he had with his collegue Gordon Kane: he bet 100$ that the Higgs boson would never be found. Hawking also proposed that Peter Higgs would be give na Nobel prize. I'm surprised if he doesn't get it.

If Hawking Recommended the Nobel Prize for physics work to someone they will get it.
