My Arctic cooler has versions for Intel or AMD, so I assumed it was the case for all coolers ?

Al, I know all motherboards are compatible with all cases. Motherboards are specific to either Intel or AMD CPU's. With Intel CPU's, be wary of sockets as these are not inter-changable.
I'm sure all coolers are standard fittings for both Intel and AMD. Usually you get fittings for both in the package. Best to choose a cooler then Google for compatability to be safe.
This is why I would go for a pre-built with all the parts you choose. Built OS installed Stress tested Overclocked Warranty
You will have plenty of opportunity to upgrade in time. Mine was a pre build but only the case and power unit are original

I don't think people understand what I mean. I'm going to buy this motherboard: translate.google.fi/translate?sl=fi&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=fi&ie=UTF-8&layout=2&eotf=1&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jimms.fi%2Ftuote%2F990FX-PROFESSIONAL&act=urlThey say: "Combo Cooler Option - you can use LGA775/1155/1156-CPU coolers" As far as I know, that means it supports CPU coolers that are compatible with LGA775/1155/1156 meaning that the CPU it's cooling is made by Intel, not by AMD. My CPU will be a AMD-made one. Am I missing something here or what is going on? Is the motherboard supporting a CPU cooler for a CPU it doesn't support? Please try to explain. I've been asking this for days and no one seems to be able to either read the question or know the answer. wobbly: I don't think I can with to a pre-built rig anymore since I got the new graphic card already (ASUS GTX 560 ti) and it's unpacked.

Al, you can get a pre-built without a graphics card and slot yours in. Sorry you are getting conflicting info from all around you. Welcome to PC World ;D 'no one seems to be able to either read the question or know the answer' Both The question is confusing and I know not much more about the subject than you Al Another option would be to go for a MB/CPU/RAM bundle. At least you will know the CPU & MB are compatible. I would phone the people you want to get your gear from and ask them. Wob ;D

Phoning the shop is actually a pretty good idea. Although in the best case scenario I'd get all the help I need from you. I'll try to make the question simpler once more. It says "Combo cooler - you can use LGA xx /x/xxx (Intel's CPU) CPU coolers". Does this mean I can't use AM3/Am2+/Am2 (AMD's CPU) coolers? Does it even matter if I go with a cooler like BTTF's: with support to both AMD's and Intel's CPU's? The CPU and the motherboard are compatible. The RAM should be compatible as well. I'm just confused about the cooler. Hopefully someone who knows a lot about computers (Spartan) could answer this simple question: would this cooler work with the CPU, case and the motherboard? www.jimms.fi/tuote/AK-CC017I'm still going with the AsRock 990FX mobo, AMD FX-4170 CPU and quite probably the Antec Eleven Hundred case. Forgot to mention in the earlier post where I was telling which parts I'm getting: originally I was going for a 750 GB hard drive but now I'm going with a 1 TB one.

Don't quite know what they mean by that Al. Have you tried the MB manufacturers website to see if the statement about the Intel coolers is a bit clearer ?

I'm hearing you Al! It looks like a typo or just plain misinformation. The spread on the legs of an Intel cooler are equadistant in a square pattern. The AMD cooler legs spread out more one way than the other making a rectangular pattern. You can, however, find coolers that have adaptors and are compatable with both. The cooler you have linked above doesn't look like it will work unless it comes with adaptors for the AMD 3+ board.

ok Al hopefully you have not made any regrettable mistakes yet.....
the Zalman coolers I suggested are suggested for a reason, THEY WORK. The reviews on them are nothing short of top notch and that means better performance and longer life. That 800W PSU is great, its single rail and if you like it, great, no problems there.
The Cooler Master CM690 is a great case BTW.
The Zalman coolers that state they support AM3 processors WILL 100% support AM3+ as they are the same bracket design thanks to AMD not being a bunch of retarded monkey's when it comes to aftermarket cpu mounting brackets. The Zalman cooler I recommended also comes with excellent thermal paste so you can save money there. To clarify only intel based motherboards need additional mounting brackets, the AMD ones do not and yes they are included in most CPU cooler kits.
GET RID OF THAT WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR GREEN DRIVE NOW! What you want is a WESTERN DIGITAL CAVIAR BLACK, they are the high performance drives, the green drives are low performance low energy consumption.

...AMD not being a bunch of retarded monkey's when it comes to motherboard/cpu upgrading... Intel hasn't changed since Pentium 4
