- Use the online map on a second monitor to try and figure out where you are.
- Notice the shape of the coastline, the contour of the terrain, and any man-made features to identify your position.
- Find roads, railroad tracks, powerlines as liner features to assist.
- Lakes, ponds, islands, rock outcroppings, and prominent hilltops can also assist.
- Look at the size, shape, orientation of buildings.

Navigation in DayZ is not my strong point, by any means, but if you have a watch you can use the position of the sun to gauge direction.

Added some more videos to this thread.
If you find a map, some servers will allow you to see your position depicted by a blue dot. Orange dots are unknown characters; likely zombies.
Tiberian taught me how to enter a wavepoint on the map. Shift key and left mouse button on the map establishes the wave point. Then a Heads Up Display (HUD) of the distance to wavepoint will show up on your screen. Face to the left or right to get the distance indicator to the center of your screen and now you are heading toward your established wavepoint. I have been using a lot lately.
Nice to have wavepoint option which is as significant as the compass to moving to the next desired site.

Don't you mean waypoints? Anyway, I think I read from somewhere that if you put notes on the map, (or spot an enemy) everyone with a map could see them. I don't know if this was a limitation of the engine or a bug or if it has been fixed.
I'll try to get Day Z operational this weekend.

Don't you mean waypoints? ... I meant the singular wavepoint. The interface I was using was limited to one wavepoint. Good to hear your may be operational soon with DayZ.

Find a server that allows you to see your location using the in-game map (loot item) and establish a wavepoint.
Save servers as Favorites and get the clan on the servers to test them - good ping for both sides of the pond - fewer hackers - good day/night cycle - wavepoint on map enabled

Not tested "You can set markers while being in the vehicle channel, which basically means only you can see them. Unless you're in a vehicle with someone else."
