I just read about this mod on RPS and now I have to buy Arma 2. Eventually. Day Z is a zombie survival mod. You start with a basic pistol and some supplies and that's pretty much it. There are 49 other people on one server, plus hordes of NPC zombies. There is just one goal: to survive. You can be a loner, you can team up with someone, you can become a bandit and kill other players (you don't choose a class or anything, you just do whatever you want to) or whatever you can imagine. Maybe you'd like to be a bandit hunter who brings justice? A Robin Hood type of guy who steals from the rich and gives to the poor? You may think 50 players on an enormous island isn't enough, but I beg to differ. It's a zombie apocalypse so there's only few survivors. And people ruining other people's games fits it perfectly. If it supports Mumble, it would be the best zombie game ever made, even if it's only in alpha stage right now. www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/10/thank-you-for-the-dayz-part-zero/www.dayzmod.com/downloads.php(the download link didn't work when I tried, maybe there's too much traffic) I haven't watched all of it yet. At 3:00 there's... Well, just watch it and enjoy.

I saw the same video posted in the EA UK Forum. Looks interesting. I am not much of a Zombie fan.

After reasearching a bit more it seems that this mod is causing thousands of players to try to join in on the action overloading ArmA2's information servers and making it close to impossible to get in. I havn't tried regular ArmA2 or OA but I'm guessing this is going to be an ArmA wide problem.
ArmA is working fine so it looks like its a problem on the DayZ mod server. I guess they didn't expect so many people to try to play at the same time.

I was able to get on a server but I started with nothing. I made my way through the woods and came up on a small town. By the time I could get close enough to a door to try to look in for any supplies I started hearing shreaking and groaning from zombies. They started coming out of the wood work. Before I knew it I was being chased by about eight of them. I ran as far away from the town as possible then just let them kill me. When I spawned back in I had nothing again. I guess there was a glitch because it says on the website that you start with a pistol. I was able to get close to the town again and look in a couple houses. I found a backpack and a bunch of ammo but no gun. Of course I got chased and killed again and will likely start with nothing again. It may sound like I wouldn't want to try again but I do. It seems everyone else does too because there are more than 20 servers with this mod and all of them are full! If we all want to get in a game of this together we might have to rent our own server.

Having no gun at all sounds frustrating. Are you sure you have patched Arma 2 and OA properly? A post in the RPS article gave a link to where you can download the latest patch, in case you don't know it yet: www.arma2.com/beta-patch.phpArma 2 has become a top seller on Steam, quite probably thanks to this amazing mod. There was a screenshot of the Steam top 10 best selling games list somewhere (Arma 2 being the fifth or something close to fifth) but I can't seem to find it. Arma 2 was released in 2009 and it is not in sale. Hey, if there's a mod played by at least A THOUSAND players, it has to be good. Hopefully they will keep on updating it so it will become better and better as the time goes by. Just by reading about it tells me it's already a perfect zombie game. A huge open map (the island of Chernarus from vanilla Arma 2) and the only goal is to survive. And you can do pretty much anything you want. I really like how people will get all paranoid after getting good weapons and meeting unknown people. Will they be friendly? Are they bandits, will they shoot me? Losing your hard-earned items is something you don't want to happen. So you have to be careful. One thing that may hinger co-op playability with friends is that you won't always spawn on the same place after you die (?) and you don't even have a map when you spawn. So good luck describing the environments to your buddies and hoping they come across. This actually can be seen on the video I posted where they sometimes meet their friends again. The island is 225 square kilometres so you could probably play for months without seeing the same landmarks again if you keep moving. A great video here.

Sounds like you're having fun with this one Scriv.
I am updated and playing.
I did figure out there are a few different modes of gameplay. When looking for a server don't pick one that says hardcore in the name. This is where you get no gear what so ever. The ones I have tried that aren't labeled with a mode or the ones that say normal in them are where you start out as expected. It can be a pain though because others are popping in left and right and if you don't get the drop on them you will die. It can get pretty frustrating. It does seem like it could be a lot of fun though especially if you can get in with a group.

I was able to successfully download the unwanted "Free Downloader" with lots of free spamware. Looks like I downloaded pieces of the DayZ mod.
How do I get the DayZ to download properly?
I saw the link to the instructions Taz posted. It looked like it was related to Steam.

Here's the link... dayzmod.com/downloads.php (Important: Use one of the manual download links at the bottom.) Extract the file into your main Arma2 folder. Then make a new shortcut on your desktop that points to your arma2oa.exe located in your main Arma2 folder. Now right click that new shortcut and click properties. Then click Shortcut. In the box labeled, "target", at the end of the string add the characters -mod=@dayz It should look something like this: "C:\Program Files\Bohemia Interactive\ArmA 2\arma2oa.exe" -mod=@dayz Hit apply and OK. When you launch the game using the new shortcut, after all the splash screens, on the main options page you should see a small @dayz in the upper right hand corner of the screen. Then shoot dem zombies.

It's supposed to rain this afternoon, so I'll be ready to hunt. I'll log in to Xfire so you can find me.

PC Gamer just had an interview with the devs. It's a long interview and it's in two parts. I've yet read only the first part and I learned something new from DayZ: you can get infected (not with the zombie virus I assume), zombies can hear you talking in the in-game VoIP and they will investigate a lot of different sounds. Part 1: www.pcgamer.com/2012/06/22/day-z-arma-3-interview-on-left-4-dead-skyrim-player-emotion-and-in-game-disease/Part 2: www.pcgamer.com/2012/06/23/day-z-arma-3-interview-optimization-map-design-radios-porting-day-z-into-arma-3/Edit: some things from the second part. If you can run Arma 2 you can run Arma 3. The lighting effects are much better this time, and during the night you want to use a muzzle flash suppressor so your muzzle flash won't be seen. The rockets have a new back-blast that will light up the ground. They will port Day Z over to Arma 3. People have taken different roles in Day Z, the most obvious being regular survivors and bandits, but there has also been a doctor (who figured out the wholehealth system and how to treat everything) with armed escort, a group of guys transporting people to places in a helicopter. (no fees charged, although they got some donations) The devs are thinking of making a radio system for Day Z. Walkie talkies, baby radios, that sort of stuff. It's not a problem of design (the ACRE mod has done it, the transmission can even get distorted if you are in a forest or that sort of a place) but a problem of execution. It's a big job to do.
