I bought a new joystick for BF3 in an attempt to become a competent flyer. But just like like BF2 I'm struggling. The popular choice seems to be keyboard and mouse, so would really appreciate some advice. What's your key setup ?

Hey BTTF ;D Unfotunately everyone has different preferances. The joystick support in BF3 is not the best (yet) I noticed jets to be a lot more responsive since the last patch. I am still using my old faithfull Saitek Cyborg joystick. It works perfectly well in BF3 (ask Viper, JerseyME and jerseybean) ;D All keys are mapped to the joystick. You will find while flying you won't have time to find the keyboard ! The main keys to worry about are: Flares Boost Airbrake (close throttle) Spotting Secondary weapon selection/change The rest aren't that important, bail for example. Strangely, I can't map Teamspeak. That is why I am quiet when flying

Unless you are already using pedals while flying, you could try binding the Teamspeak push-to-talk button on a pedal. Scriv tried this but it didn't work for him. Or you could try to be an acrobat: put the PTT key on the keyboard and hit it with your elbow while flying. Or with your chin. Or get another keyboard, place it on the floor beside your feet and use your toes to press the PTT button.
Note: I am not responsible if you look like an idiot while trying to follow my advice. Try these at your own risk. If you want crazy and/or creative advice on anything, just ask me.

For BF3, I use the default configuration (mouse & Speedpad). I could not figure out how to reverse the Y axis, so I relearned flying using the opposite motion. It took me a couple days to get used to it.
BF2 was more repsonsive and less forgiving BFBC2 was almost a joke. Had to adjust the dpi and it flew like a christmas ornament. BF3 is not too bad and is more forgiving as compared to BF2

Wobbly, I do intend to use the joystick for jets, it was the helicopter key settings I was after Sorry, I should have said I use the same joystick buttons for jets and helis. Flares, change weapons etc. Try and keep it simple. I've yet to sort the 'hat switch' for looking about. The 'twist' is important, more so for helis. You can hover and twist the joystick to turn and keep your gunner on the target. Don't worry about struggling flying BTTF. You need to be prepared for a big k/d hit learning . Monday nights with the Jerseyboys have been fun. We are finding empty servers to practice flying both jets and helis. We are all on roughly the same skill level so are not getting slaughtered by aces

You need to be prepared for a big k/d hit learning . WHAT !!!!!!! The cost of becoming a better pilot. Unless, you get on an unranked or empty ranked with too few players so stats do not count.

I only remapped a couple things for flying.
The first thing I remapped was the flare key. I remapped it to the spacebar since it isn't used while flying. I found it easier and faster than trying to hunt for the X key while buggering out as fast as possible.
In BF2 you can individually select inverted mouse for each mode of play. Just click on the Helecopters tab and select it and it will only be inverted while in a chopper.
In BF3 the selection is under the main controls tab. Inverted Look and Inverted Flight are the first two. Inverted look is on foot aiming and looking and ... well you get the picture by now I'm sure. If not raise your hand so I can come back there and hit you over the head with a frying pan because you are a retard.
The only other thing I remapped was the enter/exit vehicle key. I find myself getting in a panic quite often while trying tight manuvers and missing the W key where I end up jumping out of the aircraft. I remaped it to P recently and it seems to be working okay. Although I do find myself standing in front of vehicles and aricraft for a few extra seconds now for some wierd reason.

I have done accidnetly hit the exit key several times in BF2. I am usually so shocked by the event that the parachute does not get deployed. Ooops!!

hi andy, i use a mouse and keyboard for heli's and i find the best way to do it is to increase the mouse sensitivity ( just a little at a time) and put all the main funtions on your mouse e.g. flares, teamspeak then use the keyboard for reload(r key) change weapon (f) and w,a,s,d for trottle etc... i find that u can do more precise movements with a mouse and keyboard e.g. low level flying, but defo use your joystick for jets as it makes life alot easier to do fast evasive manouvers, but i might add even on jets i still use my keyboard for trottle and weaopon switching and my joystick just replaces the mouse.
