Just ordered it today and will do a review. Folks seem happy with it and say it is a challenge. Still takes place in Berlin in 1945. Can't wait to snipe me some Reds. ;D
I liked the PS2 version just played it the other day.

I downloaded the demo from Steam about a week ago, but to my disappointment it didn't support Windows XP. I've also tried the demo of the first installment. It was very realistic if you wanted it to be: there was bullet drop, wind effect and other stuff. I liked it even if it was a bit difficult. (I played on the middle difficulty level)
From what I've gathered by reading about it and watching gameplay videos, V2 seems to be a bit more linear. There's a X-ray view of the bullet going through the target but I don't like it. I don't know if it can be turned off. With the x-ray view you can see how the bullet shatters the skull in a head shot or some other body parts if you aim elsewhere...
I guess it's a decent game at the very least.

The x-ray cam will get old quick IMO.

Initial thoughts Pros: Graphics are well rendered, enjoy the realistic shooting thankfully the x-ray view is not for every shot. Like booby trapping bodies and wounding to draw out more enemies.
Cons:Would have liked more options to flank enemies it seems to me you are forced into fights. I would rather use stealth or cut through a building. This should have been a free roam game. My other gripe is that no matter how well your field craft is enemies seem to spot you. I took shots from the back of a room using sound to mask my shot and still got spotted.
I am enjoying it so far and will post more as I play.

Well, if it was possible to use cunning and stealth and flank the enemy or use similiar tactics, then sure. I'd buy the game almost immediately. I'm a huge fan of stealth games. I've got all Splinter Cell games, all Hitman games and all Thief games. Sadly Thief 1 and 2 don't work since they're so old, but I'm right now playing through the third installation, Deadly Shadows. If there's anything you'd like to ask about stealth games, ask away. I'll make a thread for the stealth genre soon, so no need to highjack this thread.
But about Sniper Elite v2: How linear is the game? Were my fears correct? Are there multiple routes from point A to point B? Or multiple appraoches? Games with replayability are games I usually like.

Not linear enough for me. I still enjoy playing it and the ballistics to make a shot make this worth playing. It is frustrating to be forced into firefights and not have fieldcraft play a factor.
It will tie me over until Spec Ops The Line is released.

One of the few official reviews of the game www.rockpapershotgun.com/2012/05/18/the-rps-verdict-sniper-elite-v2/In summary, they say it's too linear and there's too much run-n-gun. On another reivew on a Finnish site they said going Rambo is impossible thanks to the character's inability to aim properly at close range. I don't know who to trust here. Metacritic score right now for PC is 64.

Sniper Elite (1) was really well done when you cranked up realism to maximum, most of what you see is not on "realistic", most of us can run it on PC and there is a free demo of it on STEAM, try it on the hardest settings, it might be linear but its still a fun game. I will wait for it to go on sale about 5-6 months from now and get it for about 19.99 or so. I own Sniper Elite 1 and like I said, I liked it.

I find the aiming for CQB decent. For me I would have liked free roam and stress field craft. I was a Designated marksman for my platoon and have some experience in urban "sniping" for force protection. Shooting from inside a building away from the window to muffle the report.Using cover and not shooting from a obvious position.I use the term sniping loosely as it is a broad term. Some feel one is not a sniper if they are not school trained. Some of the most successful snipers were not school trained.A Finn was one of them as was some of the German and Soviet snipers in Stalingrad.
I am enjoying the game and on the hardest settings it is very satisfying to make a shot. With the urban setting of 1945 Berlin I have not shot over 300 meters yet.I do not like that enemy AI can hit me with a PPSH41 from a distance I find it just as good "maybe" a tad better than the PS2 version.
For more on sniping I recommend the book Fry The Brain the art of urban sniping.Very well written and debunks a lot of myths about sniping. You can find it on Amazon worth the money IMHO.
FYI the coriolis effect is hollywood BS.(sounds good though.) A rifle is a line of sight weapon bullet drop is more important than curveture of the earth. No matter the range. For Naval gunfire and Field Artillery the Coriolis effect is a factor as you are shooting beyond the line of sight.
Al I give it 4 stars and think you might enjoy it.Wait until it is on sale I do not have buyers regret.
Sorry for the tangent on sniping.

Some of the most successful snipers were not school trained.A Finn was one of them as was some of the German and Soviet snipers in Stalingrad. Simo Häyhä? I think he was just a farmer, but become one of the best snipers in WWII. Some random stuff I know about him: he didn't use a magnifying scope in the fear the scope's glint would give his position away. He also put snow in his mouth so his breath wouldn't be visible in the winter. And he survived the entire war.

That is a fact Simo did not use a scope. There was a Loyalist sniper in Belfast that used a shotgun with slugs to foil ballistic evidence.

Lol, I liked that too. The sound effect was the best. No idea how to spell it, or I would repeat it.
