These Mythbuster videos provide useful information. More episodes below:
...And a way to land a jet.
Oh, I wish EA hadn't wanted to release BF3 earlier than MW3 was released. They could have actually had time to test the game.

Seen these before, they are excellent and a bit of an eye opener.

That video Al goes along way in explaining why sometimes you feel like you couldn't hit a barn door and everyone seems to be able to get the drop on you. To rounds when it all goes your way. Not always a level playing field

You have to remember that the video was recorded on a server with a ping of about 100. But it only had two players on it. Maybe the situation is a bit better on lower ping servers. I assume playing on LAN would have 0 ping, but of course that isn't possible with the game whose lead platform was PC. Can you even see ping in-game?
But it seems that it's the best to be an aggressive player and go around corners guns blazing, instead of waiting behind cover. Or you just have to make sure the enemy doesn't see you first by e.g. hiding in a bush (which doesn't even always work, sometimes you think you're in full over and the enemy sees you uvery well. Probably because the name tags appear and there's the 3d spotting and the 2d spotting on the map).

Is it true if you fire your weapon you spot yourself?

If you mean that by shooting an unsuppressed weapon, you appear on the enemy's mini-map, then yes. But if you have a silencer, you don't appear on the mini-map, with the exception of some bugged guns.
Other stupid things stuffed in BF3: the vehicles are permanently 3d-spotted and mines are permanently 2d-spotted (shown on mini-map). If you play on hardcore, I think all this is removed. But it probably removes the minimap as well. But does it matter, after all there's no minimap in PR and no one's complaining.
That video hopefully answers some questions.
