OK I thought we could use an unranked server for practice and for playing against other clans, as the NUNYA clan have. I have set one up on my PC so obviously if my PC goes down then the server goes down. Could someone try to login to it and let me know, as of now I haven't opened any ports or tried anything else. I can join my own server from my PC but I need someone external to join. Let me know how you get on. I will adjust rules and add passwords, change maps after we have the basics up and running.
The ip address is- 192.168.1.2 and the port is- 16567

Sorry, I did not get to this sooner. I was out of town.
No joy as of 1850 hrs UTC on Thursday, 1 May 08.
I am sure you probably did not have the server running at the time of the test.
It will be GREAT, when it is running.

Looks from the IP address this is what your router is assigning to your computer for an IP not the IP we need to access the server. We will need the IP address you router is assigned from your ISP then you need to port forward to that computer internally to your router. 198.168.?.? are used as defaults for private IPv4 network addresses. Let me know if you need an y help with this.

Wait, so unranked servers are free? Or only, if you host them yourself?

Only if, u host them yourself. Yes, we just need to find the right ip address, I think, and do something fancy with the router. That is what i heard. I am sure that Ghostrider has the specifics.

What would be the system requiments to host them? Because I have a old laptop and an old CPU lying around my room, so when I get back from vacation I could set them up to run round the clock.

The thing about server's is that you need to have a pretty good computer to run it on, or else the game experience will be crap. Most computers that have servers have duo core and 4gb ram. I know some have a quad and 8gb ram, but that just overloads it and theres no point unless you want to run like 2 servers at once.

This isn't the case at all.
The specs for a PC to run a BF2 server are:
Minimum specifications for 16 players - Processor: 1.0 GHz and Memory: 384 MB RAM
Recommended specifications for 64 players - Processor: Intel Pentium IV or Athlon XP 3.0 GHz and Memory: 1 GB RAM
Bandwidth: 2.5 Mbit. Recomended: 5 Mbit
So I'm not sure of the specs of your laptop but you should be OK.
The truth is that servers do not need a massive spec as they are not running any actual graphics or sound or even a BF2 level, all the server does is takes in information and sends it back out, for example when you shoot an enemy your PC sends the server packet data saying that you have shot and the location of both yourself, the enemy and the bullets path, the server acknowledges this and sends back details of the hit, hit points, Armour, kill etc. It must have a reasonable processor as you can see, but nothing amazing as its doing exactly what they are built to do, handle large amounts of information quickly.
Bottem line is vitually any PC built in the last few years will be more than able to cope with a 16 or even 32 Player server. The only question is can your internet bandwidth? =SWF=Angry

Wouldnt' the internet bandwidth be taking away from his original computers internet. I had a server run on my computer once and it slowed down my dads internet on his computer by a lot. When I turned it off, it worked perfectly fine.

Yeah it would eat up the bandwidth, it really depends on your connection, I have an 8mb connection which i have run servers on before with no trouble but before that I was on 2mb and it ate the bandwidth. What is your connection speed Ares? I will try and set a server up here again as soon as I have 5 mins.

OK I have just had a go at setting up a server again, and need some assist, I have all the ports forwarded and the latest server patch 1.41, It all seems to be up and running fine, with no errors, but when i load up BF2 on even another PC on my own LAN I cant see it on the server list, and the IP it seems to give me in the console is definatly my internal ip not my external one, I can join the server on the same PC as I am running it so it is definatly working ok, im just struggling to get an IP that sounds right and be able to see it on the server list in-game.
Any ideas?? I have had it running fine before now and played with a few of my mates, but I just dont seem to be able to get it this time! =SWF=Angry
