gamepro Arma 3 Coming Summer 2012 19 MAY 2011 by Pete Davison Czech-developed military sim Arma II is a highly detailed, complex game that inspired a loyal following of fans. Developer Bohemia Interactive has announced it's working on a sequel. Arma II is a different breed of military shooter to your average Call of Duty. Featuring 50-player battles, 225 square kilometers of open-world landscape modelled from real-world geographical data and a dynamic campaign that unfolds according to player actions, it's a game that is difficult to get into but has inspired one of the most dedicated communities of players out there. Today, developer Bohemia Interactive has announced that a sequel is on the way, scheduled for release on PC next summer. The new game features an expanded story-driven single player campaign that promises to "evolve" the player "from a lone prey into a military commander." Taking the role of Cpt. Scott Miller who washes ashore alone in hostile territory, it's up to the player to muster the beleaguered and scattered NATO forces to drive back the Eastern armies. The game features an enhanced version of the Real Virtuality engine the game is built on, with full support for NVidia PhysX. As with previous entries in the series, it's built for modding, too, with an "easy to use" mission editor included with the package to allow community members to create their own scenarios. "Our ambition is not only to deliver the next generation of Arma with the improved engine, but also to fully exploit the potential of our new technology in the gameplay," says Ivan Buchta, creative director of the game. "You can look forward to the unique experience of blending sandbox-style combat with a rich story." Bohemia Interactive will be showing off the new game in private presentations at E3 next month. To find out more, check out the official website. As a side note, the older gamers amongst us may be interested to know that Bohemia Interactive is also working on a quasi-sequel to 1988 Amiga action-strategy classic.

rock, paper, shotgun Arma 3 & Underpants by Alec Meer 13 SEP 2011 For some people, there’s nothing better than watching nine Arma 3 videos in a row. Those people are going to be extremely disappointed, for today I am only able to bring them eight Arma 3 videos in a row. I have let you down. Perhaps even betrayed your trust. I am so sorry. One day, I hope, we might come to love each other again. Those of you with less exacting tastes will hopefully be able to draw some small measure of pleasure from the following 10-ish minutes of footage culled from presentations made at GamesCom last month. Includes a whole lot of undersea action, including what I’m prepared to guess is the most realistic flipper physics consumer videogames have ever before offered. Also, includes discussion of how much time they spent convincingly recreating soldiers’ underpants. PRE-ORDERED. Nicely laid-back and chatty videos, given Arma’s steely-eyed nature, these – worth a watch whether or not you’re into soldier sims. (Er, you probably shouldn’t load the below post on a Netbook or anything else that has itself a cry when presented with Flash videos.)

This is why I like Rock Paper Shotgun so much. It's a PC-only website with a good taste of humor.
Anyway, what do I think about Arma 3: I don't like how they are using prototype weapons and how the game is set on year 2025. How can that be realistic? Of course modders will fix this, but I think this was a surprising decision by the developers.
And now it's getting even heavier than before. I think my rig could run Arma 2 (according to Can You Run It and a demo I played) (I guess I should buy it somewhere), but Arma 3? I don't think so. Whatever, I should upgrade my computer at some point anyway.
The screenshots looked really good. Some fo them are so realistic that I almost thought they were real photos.

It does look great but it is so hard to get into and learn all the controls. You need to commit a great deal of time to the game, not one for Dices casual gamers.
RIP clan (Rusty In Places) are in to ArmA 2, I remember a few of us doing one of their training sessions on their server in support of the then up and coming PR mod. I wouldn't be surprised if they did a similar thing for the 3rd instalment.
Think PR but harder, that's about ArmA's level. Not for the faint hearted.
Ps. I absolutely loved the original Operation Flashpoint despite its bugs, but only played singleplayer although I'm not sure if it actually had multiplayer back then.

It looks a lot like the 3d engine used in Grand Theft Auto. Colllisions and vehicle movement are very similar as well. I wonder if they are actually building off that platform or just using pieces of it.

I highly doubt they are using any other engine than their own. I believe they are using the VBS engine, which the US army uses for training. Probably the game version of the engine (used in Arma series) is a bit less realistic and more fun to play, and has better graphics.
But who knows?

Release date for ArmA 3 is 3rd Quarter 2012, 4th Quarter 2012, or 2013 depending on the source. The main ArmA website has 4th Quarter 2012 posted on the home page. I do believe I remember an announced delay previously.

I have been following ArmA II's and ArmA III's statuses religiously, BIS has announced that ArmA III with have full professional mod/development tools right at release, they have furthered this effort due to the massive success of the DayZ mod.
With Benny porting over his Warfare BE gamemode to ArmA III, I will also be porting =SWF= Edition to RC A3.xxxx, more information will be made available as more details about ArmA III are made public, especially about backwards compatibility with ArmA II mods. The BIS developers have said they are looking into making a port over tool for some ArmA II stuff to make it easier to develop masterful mods in ArmA III, rather than stating again from scratch.
ArmA III is definitely a game to keep track of, this game will be a major success at its current press rate. Its a shame that DICE does not look at this and offer a professional set of mod tools so that the community can make the game better. BIS in my honest opinion is what all other PC Game Developers should take ideas from, as their community is stronger than any other than I have ever seen.
