Kharg Island map is set on the real-life version of Kharg Island, situation just off the coast of Iran. The island is an important port of oil transport and oil pipelines and serves as an important Naval Base for the Iranian Navy.

I like that they are using real world locations. Heard a rumor that one map was going to be the Kurdish capital?Went there twice during my tour. Al-Sumineya(sp)?

The flags (all three of them) are in a straight line, and most of them seem to be pretty close to each other. The playable area is probably the side of the island the flags are on, not the whole island. Mind that it's console footage, but the map design isn't really changed at all on PC.
So, from the vanilla maps, we have one real big-scale Battlefield map, Caspian Border, and the rest are infantry-focused. Operation Firestrom could be good if it had a couple of flags on the outer parts of the map, but I don't think they would add more flags anymore. ...But we still have Back to Karkand? I'll predict what they will be like: - Strike at Karkand: the map is cut in half at some point and there are less flags. - Wake Island: the flags will be closer to the airport flag, the map is probably scaled down in size. - Gulf of Oman: the US and MEC bases are moved closer to the center, as are the capturable flags. - Sharqi Peninsula: they have removed some outer flags and MEC only has one un-cap flag.
I don't understand the map design in BF3 maps. Either the flags are in a straight line or clustered in one area with a radius of 200 m. Only Caspian Border has a good design. On a side note, Diego Jimenez, who designed Caspian Border, also designed Seine Crossing. So we still have some hope, as the multiplayer of that map was from ps3 team deathmatch. Maybe the conquest version will be good?

I think the designs are more bc2 to keep the action hectic and constant to please the CoD and casual gamer.
Dumbed down all round I guess. I can't believe the bf2 maps will be FULL reincarnations.

I don't know, that footage is from a jet traveling at high speed. Yes, the flags are in a line but that jet is covering some distance. Watch that clip again and picture yourself on foot, there is some traveling to do !
With the flag layout, I think the gameplay will be similar to 'Wake Island' or 'Oman' The US base being the carrier, the first objective will be just to get a foothold on the island. BF2 Wake is narrow with no way of flanking around the flags.(the flags are in a line and the playing area narrow) But I loved this map! It looks like there is plenty of room to flank the flags on Kharg, PC version might be different also.
We will know for sure soon ;D

DICE has already said MANY times that the console versions will be smaller to help keep the fights interesting as they only support 24 players maximum vs the PC's massive 64 player. 64 Player versions of conquest are set to 5 flags.
