First, I have to say that its been a lot of fun playing with =SWF=, and I look forward to wearing my =SWF= tag. BF3 looks to be awesome. Spartan keeps us up to date on beta news. If anyone knows how to setup joysticks so we might all use aircraft better in BF3, please let us know. I'm looking for a new joystick. Anyone have any favorites to suggest to the whole squad? Any help in tweaking our machines and OS's to handle this visual juggernaut would be appreciated. S! (salute) Cmdr_McBrag

Hey McBrag, I'm sure you can wear the tags now with the 'r' =SWFr=. Scriv will put you right.
As for joysticks , I have an old faithfull Saitek 'Cyborg Evo'. (wired, no rumble) Unfortunately it has been discontinued, but I would recommend something similar. You should avoid wireless IMO, more reliable. Rumble interferes a bit, it is not a flight sim. You just want to get on someones tail without fighting force feedback.
Hopefully I will be able to help with setups once the game is out. I'm also looking forwar to some air time in BF3

Welcome to the clan.
I can tell you one joystick you don't want. That would be the Logitech Force. Every Logitech force feedback joystick has been plagued with problems. The most common being wear. I had mine for about three months before it was so worn out I couldn't use it any more. It is a shame because when it was new I could set my flight sims to the highest difficulty and realism and get excellent feedback as to when I was about to overstress the airframe. If they use some cheap roller bearings instead of plastic on plastic bushings it wouldn't drive the price up too much and would be a much more reliable platform.

Oh I'm going to date myself. It was either one of the Star Wars games or Wing Commander III ( the one with Mark Hamil) but I went out and purchased a logitech wingman extreme with the option for serial connection or this new dangled USB thing. To this day it still works with BFBC2 and helps me fly the crap out of a helicopter!

So, do you set the dead zones so the stick input doesn't constantly move the chopper around when trying to maintain a hover? I'm always wandering, and have wondered how some folks are able to maintain a stable hover?

I have always set my dead zones to minimal, just enough so if you let go of the stick everything stays central. This ensures a quick responce and no delays. Best to find an empty server and experiment. As for maintaining a steady hover, practice, practice, practice ! These good flyers put in 100's of hrs. All the earlier BF games have the 'Create a Server' option where you choose a map and off you go without hiderance from other players. In BF2 I used to fly and land from flag to flag, foof to roof etc. Good practice. I'm not sure if this feature will be in BF3, I hope so

I use a mouse and keyboard to fly the Helios.
